Sports physiotherapy is the treatment and rehabilitation sustained during sporting activities. Sports injuries differ from everyday injuries due to the greater stress put on muscles, joints and bones.
What are the different types of sports injuries?
Sports injuries fall into two categories:
This includes injuries such as ankle sprains or knee ligament injuries. If you fall into this category of injury then our professionals will begin by diagnosing the degree of sprain and the musculoskeletal area involved. Treatment is initially aimed at reducing swelling and inflammation followed by a graduated exercise program to restore movement and strength.
These are injuries that have developed gradually from repetitive movement or wear and tear. Here, treatment involves analysis of the area that is causing your pain and then diagnosing the root cause of this. That may entail analysing training regime and/or the biomechanics of your technique.
How do we treat sports injuries?
Treatment of your symptoms may include:
- Taping and compression,
- Icing the area
- Dry needling
- Restoring joint mobilisation
- Deep tissue massage
- Stretching programs
- Strengthening and retraining
